Waters entering the Mediterranean funnel through the straits of Gibraltar and then proceed along the North coast of Africa.
Due to the intense evaporation process the waters become much more saline and on their return journey to the Atlantic (via Gibraltar) are consequently much heavier. Water therefore enters the Mediterranean at surface level and is returned at lower levels.

The general speed of currents passing Salobreña is about 1 to 1.5 knots.

The western end of the Mediterranean experiences minimal tidal effect with a maximum of about 1. 5 metres close to Gibraltar.

At Salobrena and along the Costa Tropical the tidal range is only .5 of a metre.

On shore and offshore winds, due to the mountains behind the Costa Tropical, can be ferocious at times and care should be exercised when putting to sea in small craft - check the local Motril weather forecast in advance.

Sea conditions in the winter months can be suitable for surfing off Motril beach and Kite boarding is very popular.
Harbours

Safe harbours for yachtsmen exist at Marina del Esté in Almunecar/La Herradura and Motril.

Marina del Esté is a modern yacht and small boat harbour suitable for vessels up to 20 metres in length. The harbour is small and therefore you should radio or call well in advance to be certain of a space. See your Pilot Book for current call information. Fuel is available.
There are a number of restaurants on the dock side.

Motril is a substantial sea port and fishing harbour. The fish market is open early each morning, the trawler fleet is large and a major part of the local economy.

Motril also has a small private sailing club " Puerto de Deportivo Motril". The club has space for visiting yachtsmen on pontoon berths. The pontoons can accommodate vessels up to 13 metres in length. Larger vessels will anchor in the inner harbour. Phone 958 60 00 37 Fuel is available and there are restaurants and supermarkets just outside the dock gates.
